On Sunday June 3rd, Ralph and I drove four hours to Lions' Head which is located in the heart of the Bruce Peninsula (Ontario). Unfortunately it was a bit rainy, cloudy and cool so we decided to leave after lunch as opposed to arriving too early. I was on my way to join a photography workshop led by Don Martel. I knew nothing about Don or his workshops (found it on the internet) but I liked the idea of going to one in the Bruce Peninsula area where I had never been before. The plan was for Ralph to drive me to Lions Head and just stay for one night as there is no easy way to get there. I would then worry about how to get home when it ended five days later. I was really looking forward to seeing and photographing the rugged coastline of the Georgian Bay and Lake Huron. Three days before we left, my camera decided it would rather not go and refused to work anymore. I was told by Pentax that it was a major repair job so I had to rent a camera for the week. The upside to this was that it was a better camera than what I owned and I only rented one lens which meant I could travel light. The downside of course was that I had only one lens, the additional cost and that I was not familiar with this camera. The moral of the story is that owning a backup camera is always a good idea.
By early afternoon, we were well on our way. I was busy enjoying watching some bridge on my IPAD and oblivious to the outside world. Ralph just happened to see our friends Phil, Lora and Skeena cruising on by us. Some of you might be wondering how Ralph managed to see them with all of the cars on the highway when he wasn't even aware they would be on the road. it really wasn't that difficult as they were hauling their trailer which is rather unique.

Their trailer is actually yellow but you get the idea. Shortly afterwards they got off the road to get some gas so we followed them and had a nice visit (in the rain). What a great way to start the trip!

I have included a map of The Bruce Peninsula for those of you not familiar with the area. You can see how close Lions Head was to Tobermory, a place I had heard about for years. We arrived around 5.30 in perfectly sunny weather, checked into the room and then met Don and his partner, Evelyn. We had a great visit with them, it was nice for Ralph to meet some of the people I would be spending the week with. Most of the group stayed in the "house" that we had to ourselves. My room was located in the newly constructed building next door. There were a total of only five participants plus Don and Evelyn who are both excellent photographers and teachers. Ralph and I went out for a nice dinner of fish and chips which we thought appropriate. Lions Head is a fairly small town so we were able to walk everywhere as the B&B was located centrally. After dinner I met up with Don, Evelyn and LInda and drove over to Lake Huron to photograph the sunset. This was a bonus as the workshop did not officially start until the next day.

We arrived on the Lake Huron side just before sunset- perfect timing.

Here is the same shot as above without the cropping.

Pretty nice colours tonight.

This was my favourite image of the night. I did a long exposure to bring out the silkiness of the water. This shot was taken in the opposite direction of the sunset.

Just for comparison purposes I took the same photo without going for the soft water look.

One last shop of the evening. I just kept the camera on the tripod in the same position and waited for some nicer colours.
